Oxfordshire County Council unanimously backs motion to rehouse the Brodey Cancer Centre

On Monday 8 September 2026, Oxfordshire County Council unanimously supported a motion by Councillor Paul-Austin Sargent calling on the Oxfordshire University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to expedite plans to rehouse the Brodey Cancer Centre on the Horton General Hospital site.

The unanimous vote sends a clear and unambiguous message from the council to the NHS: North Oxfordshire will not accept further delay in providing cancer patients with the modern, purpose-built facility they deserve.

What the motion called for

The motion called on Oxfordshire County Council to:

  • Formally support the re-accommodation of the Brodey Cancer Centre into a purpose-built facility that meets the needs of modern oncology
  • Request the Oxfordshire University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to expedite its plans to rehouse the centre on the Horton General Hospital site
  • Commit to ongoing scrutiny of the project's progress through the Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee

A unanimous result

Every councillor present voted in favour. That cross-party unity reflects the strength of feeling across Oxfordshire about the standard of cancer care available to patients in the north of the county — and the urgency with which the NHS must now act.

What happens next

The council's unanimous resolution will be formally communicated to the Oxfordshire University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee will monitor progress and hold the Trust to account on the timeline for the new facility.

The petition — which gathered hundreds of signatures from residents across North Oxfordshire — has been presented alongside the motion as evidence of the community's determination to see this project delivered.

In the interest of transparency

I am being treated for stage 4 pancreatic cancer at the Brodey Centre. I know what it means to depend on this service. The new accommodation will not be commissioned in time to help me — but it will help the patients who come after me. That is why I fought for this motion, and why I am grateful to every councillor who supported it.
